This replica J&S HAWKEN pistol, was made by Paolo Bondini, during the 1970 - 1980 period, and is not often seen today. The percussion lock is polished Armory bright, factory engraved, and boldly marked with the J&S HAWKEN name. The factory metal ramrod has a swivel yoke to prevent loss. The walnut grip is checkered and the brass furniture was silver plated.
The polished blue diagonal flats of the 15/16" octagon barrel are marked P.Bondini - Made in Italy on the right side and Cal. 54 - Black Powder Only along with various proof marks and the serial number on the left side. A single wedge key retains the 9" barrel, including the breech plug. The bore is rifled with five equal lands and grooves, and we recommend our .530" ball, and .010" patches. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The front sight has a brass blade, and the rear sight is blued steel, mounted in a dovetail near the breech, to allow easy windage adjustment. The breech is fitted with a 6-.75mm threaded nipple.
The walnut stock has a bag butt profile, with hand checkered grip. The stock does have a few small dings and scratches from normal use. Trimmed in brass, all furniture is silver plated and the plated finish has worn from handling and use. Our bottom view shows the silver buttcap, triggerguard, ramrod pipe, and forend cap, which have all tarnished to a nice aged patina. Two lock bolts secure the lock to the opposite side of the stock.
The lock plate and hammer are polished bright and lightly engraved. The lockplate is marked J&S HAWKEN. The lock has a strong mainspring and functions as it should. Close inspection shows the adjustment screw of the single set trigger, located behind the trigger. This cam action single set trigger is tuned to fire the lock from the set position only currently. The trigger backlash is lifting the lock sear, so the trigger must be set to allow the lock to be cocked. To set the trigger push the trigger forward until it latches. Turn the adjustment screw inboard, for lighter release, but not too light.
A nice serviceable percussion pistol for your late fur trade impression. Oder it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted.
