This attractive Kentucky pistol has a comfortable grip, for a medium to large man's hand. Nice quality parts were used by contemporary builder John F. Bergmann, and the pistol is signed on the top flat of the barrel. The 9-3/8" barrel is 15/16" tapered octagon with a .60 caliber smoothbore. The bore measures .605" diameter and does have a slight cone at the end to a .615" diameter. The bore looks perfect, clean and bright. This pistol is used with some wear in the brown from handling, firing, and cleaning.
Stocked in dense curly maple, the stock has some tiger stripe figure randomly spaced from muzzle to butt. The medium size grip swells slightly at the end, for best comfort in your hand. A poured pewter forend cap is fitted to the end grain of the stock. The sterling silver front sight has a small blade and is neatly soldered to the top flat. No rear sight is fitted, but the tang bolt has been neatly aligned with the barrel. The top flat of the barrel bears the signature John F. Bergmann in script. This is a slim and attractive pistol, made from best American parts. Stocked entirely by hand, the maker has captured the look and feel of an original Kentucky pistol. This bottom view shows the brightly burnished brass hardware. The nickel silver kents in front of the lock panels wrap around to the lower edge of the lock panel. Two brass ramrod pipes retain the 3/8" diameter ramrod. The percussion lock is retained by a single lock bolts, fitted to a polished nickel silver sideplate, inlet flush to the side panel. The trigger is pinned high for best leverage. This trigger has a smooth easy release.
Ignition is provided by Siler's right hand Mountain percussion lock. This lock has classic, circa 1830 - 1850 styling with a rounded tail and uses large Siler internals. The plate has been notched for the snail bolster of the patent style breech, which is fitted with a 1/4-28 threaded stainless steel nipple. The trigger is pinned hight to provide good leverage against the sear.
