This Maryland style longrifle appears to have been influenced by the work of John Armstrong. Stocked in highly figured maple, stained to a golden brown tone, and trimmed in hand engraved nickel silver furniture with silver wire inlay. The straight octagon barrel is finished armoury bright and accented with hand engraving on the muzzle, breech and around the rear sight. This rifle is in excellent used condition. Trigger reach is 12-3/4", a bit shorter than average. This rifle weighs 8.2 pounds and has a balance point just ahead of the body of the ramrod entry pipe.
The .40 caliber straight octagon barrel is 13/16" octagon by 45-7/8" long. The octagon size and moderate bore size give the barrel a modest weight. The .40 caliber bore is cut rifled with seven lands and grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The muzzle end is decorated with small circular designs. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The barrel is fitted with a flat top rear sight dovetailed 11-1/4" ahead of the breech. The front sight is a nickel silver blade with integral base dovetailed behind the muzzle. The breech is engraved Widowmaker, numbered 188, and has a inset nickel silver panel Made for Ron Barker by L. Bryner 1995. The barrel is finished to armoury bright and has a very few small scattered speckles from the last 30 years.
The rifle is stocked in very curly maple that appears to be very dense. The stock was stained to a amber brown, and finished to a satin sheen. A double incised line extends from the toe to the lock panels, creating a slimming effect. The nickel silver buttplate has a modest curve in early 19th century style and the comb is filed with broad flats. The buttplate has a long decorative comb extension. The stock has cast-off for a right hand shooter. Cast-off places the right hand shooter's eye directly behind the line of sight making it instinctive to point and shoot. The patchbox is formed from sheet nickel silver, hand engraved, and mounted with steel screws. The patchbox door button release is mounted through the toeplate. The button appears to be very firm and patchbox panels appear very tight to the door. As this rifle has aged over the last 30 years it appears it has compressed the panels against the door. We did not open the patchbox on this rifle. It is very possible that if the door was released it would not close again. The stock is neatly raised carved along the front edge of the comb and along the rear of the lock panels. A nickel silver oval inlay decorates the top of the wrist, and has the initial B engraved. Notice the cheek, which angles wider to the rear. It will recoil back, away from your cheek.
The bottom view reveals the decorative and functional nickel silver toeplate. The toeplate has an engraved folk art border and heart piercings. The nickel silver triggerguard is burnished to a satin finish and is correctly pinned to the stock. The forearm is fitted with a decorative wear plate with hand engraving. The rifle is fitted with a 1/4" diameter ramrod fitted with a nickel silver tip with no threads for accessories. We would highly recommend leaving this slender well fitted ramrod on the rifle and using a dedicated loading and cleaning rod for service, either a 3/8" hickory ramrod or one of our stainless steel Creedmoor ramrods. The small pins that retain the barrel to the forearm are surrounded by engraved nickel silver escutcheons. The side panel is fitted with a nickel silver sideplate with piercings, hand engraved with decorative border and federal shield. The raised cheek is inlaid with a large oval with a Federal eagle clutching a sheaf of arrows and olive branch. The stock is decorated with raised carving that flows down from the wrist into, below, and behind the cheekpiece. All of the carving is very well executed with smooth clean backgrounds.
Ignition is provided by a well tuned L&R John Bailes flintlock. The lock plate is shaped in English style with a rounded pan with rain gutters. It has a very strong mainspring, for good sparking. We recommend using our best hand knapped 5/8" flints. The lock is finished to a pewter gray finish. Below the lock a set of single lever double set triggers has been installed. This single lever trigger will only fire from the set position. The rear trigger is holding the lock sear up, so you must set the trigger before you can cock the lock. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
A very highly decorated example of a contemporary longrifle with influences of John Armstrong of Emmitsburg, Maryland. The .40 caliber bore is bright and has been well maintained. The stock has very attractive figure and the carving has well cleaned backgrounds. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
