This flint longrifle is made in the style of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with brass furniture and curly maple stock. This rifle features a 38" swamped octagon Getz barrel, R.E. Davis double set triggers, and a large Siler flint lock. The barrel is signed by W. E. Spradlin. Trigger reach is 13-5/8" to fit todays average size shooter. Weight is a modest 8.3 pounds. The rifle is used with a few scattered handling marks and normal wear around the vent from firing and cleaning.
This flint longrifle is assembled around a .40 caliber 38" swamped "B" profile Getz barrel. The swamped barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares at the muzzle. The bore is cut rifled with seven lands and grooves with a slow twist for patched round balls. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The barrel is fitted with a inlaid brass plaque signed by the builder. The semi-buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 9-1/2" ahead of the breech. A browned steel blade front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle. The breech end of the barrel has been stamped SN 008, with individual hand stamps.
Stocked in curly maple, the stock has been stained to reddish brown with a golden undertone to best display the figure over the length of the stock. lights of figure. The satin smooth oil finish has been hand rubbed to a mellow sheen. The rifle is trimmed in brass furniture that was designed by the late John Bivins for the centennial rifles. The furniture on the rifle has been cleaned bright, with the exception of the ramrod pipes and sideplate that still have a dark olive aged patina. The furniture includes a engraved brass patchbox. The patchbox head is shaped with a four petal flower most commonly associated with neighboring York County. The upper mounting screw as the center of the flower. All of the mounting screw slots are neatly aligned. The head, door, and side panels are engraved, in a folk art design, to accent the shaping of the patchbox. The door has a push button release spring located in the comb of the buttplate. The door has a strong spring and springs open and closed securely. The buttplate is a wide tall mid-18th century style to spread the felt recoil over a large area. The comb of the buttplate has three tapered flats with a wedding band transition. The raised cheek piece is cleverly angled to recoil away from the shooter's face. The wrist is fitted with a nickel silver oval thumbpiece. The flared tang is is surrounded by a panel of raised carving with a potted plant design. The lock panels flare widest at the rear in early longrifle fashion.
The bottom view reveals the long brass toeplate, with thumbnail finial. The triggerguard is mounted with a pins in a traditional manner. The triggerguard bow is engraved in a martial style with a shield and stand of arms. The ramrod entry pipe is framed with a panel of raised carving in a potted plant style. The 5/16" diameter ramrod has a 8-32 threaded brass tip. The raised carving along the comb flows down from the wrist into C scrolls, a cheek with molded edge, and additional raised carving. The cheek is inlaid with brass hunter's star with openwork. The brass sideplate is nicely shaped in Lancaster County style with a square tail. Strangely the sideplate is not inlet into the side panel, which would be traditional.
Sure-fire ignition is provided by a large Siler flintlock. Finished brown, the lock plate has a hand forged appearance, and has been polished and browned. The lock plate and cock are both accented with folk art engraving. The R.E. Davis double lever double set trigger is properly adjusted to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. Correct geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
