This flint lock Thompson Center Pennsylvania Hunter Rifle is fitted with a T/C factory .45 caliber Hawken 28" kit barrel instead of the typical 32" octagon-to-round barrel. The Pennsylvania Hunter factory finished stock is in good condition with only a few minor handling marks, although we note the buttplate is from a different stock and stands proud of the wood. The blue finish on the barrel has some light scratches and small bright spots from wear. The bore is bright, clean, and has been well maintained. This .45 caliber rifle weighs 7.9 lbs. The trigger reach is 13-1/4", to fit an average size shooter..
The .45 caliber 15/16" octagon barrel is 28" in length and comes from an early T/C Hawken rifle kit. The bore is bright, with crisp rifling grooves in a 1:48 twist to shoot round balls or maxi-balls. The exterior has been a bright polished blued finish, with some light scratches and bright spots from normal use. The rear sight is screw adjustable for windage and elevation, and the front sight is Thompson Center's blued steel bead sight. The rib is a replacement to fit the shorter Pennsylvania Hunter stock. We recommend our .440" round ball, .015" patch, and Mink Oil tallow patch lubricant, over a charge of 60 grains of GOEX FFg black powder. This rifle pre-dates the QLA muzzle and the bore is rifled all the way to the end of the muzzle.
Stocked in American black walnut, the stock appears to be factory finished. The stock is fitted with a T/C factory steel buttplate, but we note it stands proud of the wood and has been cold blued. The triggerguard has a wide bow for the single trigger. Our top view shows the three hole tang of the hooked breech. The hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, withdraw the ramrod, drift the key past the underlugs, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. Place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by an oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle. The brown delrin ramrod is fitted with a darkened brass tip in the front threaded 8-32, and the brass rear tip is threaded to accept 10-32 loading and cleaning accessories.
The flint lock is color case hardened, with factory engraving. It features a fly detent, for smooth lock action, and a powerful coil mainspring, for fast lock time. The breech is fitted with a 1/4-28 threaded stainless vent liner. This lock works smoothly, with a strong mainspring, and fly detent. The trigger provides a smooth release of the lock. The single lock bolt is retained in a blued steel escutcheon, to match the other blued steel furniture.
