The Southern Mountain, or Tennessee style longrifle is stocked in maple and trimmed in iron furniture. Antique Southern Mountain rifles are often trimmed in iron furniture, with hardware store locks, and double set triggers. This rifle is fitted with a Chambers deluxe Siler flintlock, and double lever double set triggers. The 42" long, .45 caliber Rice barrel makes this rifle easy to handle. Hand made by contemporary builder Randall Buchanan this rifle is offered as used with a bright well maintained bore. This rifle is stocked with a 14" trigger reach, for an average size shooter. This trim longrifle weighs only 6.7 pounds, and will be a pleasure to carry afield.

The .45 caliber octagon barrel is 42" long. The bore is rifled with seven lands and grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is mirror bright in as new condition. Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip. After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels are Match grade quality, with bench rest capability. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed to the barrel 9" ahead of the breech. A nickel silver blade front sight with brass base is dovetailed behind the muzzle. The top flat is signed Randall Buchanan near the breech.

The maple stock is finished to a medium brown with a golden undertone. Not a "poor boy" this is a full dress Southern rifle with a crescent buttplate with a modest curve, ramrod entry pipe, and muzzle cap. All of the iron furniture is finished to a silvery-gray. A large iron patchbox is fitted to the right side of the buttstock. The patchbox is easily opened revealing a nicely sized cavity below, perfect for storing your extra shooting accessories. The long tang of the breech plug is surrounded by raised carving that flows down into the side panels. The transition from the comb to the wrist is accented by raised carving that flows down both sides of the buttstock as it transitions into incised carving. An incised line runs along the toe line of the buttstock and terminates at the rear trigger.

The bottom view shows the hand forged toeplate with hinged door. Pressing the spring head forward allows the door to open revealing a storage cavity. The hand forged and brazed three piece triggerguard is shaped with a wide bow, narrow grip rail, and curled spoon. It is mounted with screws, and still shows many forge and file marks. The 3/8" diameter ramrod passes through two rounded iron pipes and matching entry pipe. A small iron plate is found at the base of the entry pipe to protect the end grain. The ramrod is not fitted with any threaded tips to accept cleaning accessories. We recommend our #RAMROD-C-44-10 to service this rifle. Incised carving surrounds the entry pipe and runs along the ramrod channel. An iron muzzle cap protects the end grain of the forearm. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek piece that is surrounded with incised scroll carving. Two bolts pass through the large iron sideplate to retain the lock on the opposite side.

Ignition is provided by a Jim Chambers' deluxe Siler flint lock. Tuned for best performance the deluxe Siler lock features a slightly larger cock, and fancy frizzen spring. The beefy mainspring provides lots of energy, and this fast lock will throw sparks. The lock was left bright as-cast. Order our best 3/4" flints, #Flint-ENG-6, for best performance in flint lock. The steel touch hole liner is properly positioned on the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. The double lever double set triggers are correctly adjusted, you may cock the lock, or set the trigger, in any sequence. Turn the tiny set trigger adjustment screw, between the two triggers, inboard to reduce the set trigger release tension.

This Southern rifle has a bright well maintained bore. The hand forge furniture gives this rifle a primitive look. It will serve you well. Order it for a ten day visual inspection.
