Some of the grandest decorative artwork ever done in early America is to be found on the flintlock and percussion rifles that were in use between 1750 and 1850. First published by George Shumway in 1968, this was an introduction to certain prominent gunsmiths and gunmaking schools of Pennsylvania. This expanded 4th edition presents 48 important rifles and there makers in full color format! Included are several new views of each gun, along with newly discovered historical information. Access to these, and a number of previously unpublished "new" rifles, was made possible by the generous contributions of many private collectors, several museums, and the Kentucky Rifle Foundation.
Features examples of these schools; Lehigh Valley, Bucks County, Lehigh-Northampton Valley, Philadelphia, Kutztown, Berks County, Reading, Womelsdorf, Lebanon County, Dauphin County, Lancaster County, York County, Emmitsburg, Maryland, Littlestown, Franklin County - Chambersberg, Upper Susquehanna, Huntingdon, Bedford County, Sumerset County, Uniontown County, Pittsburgh.
