This replica 1858 Enfield .58 caliber two band musket was manufactured in Italy by Davide Pedersoli & Co. Designed to shoot our .577 caliber Pritchard style Minie bullet, #BALL-57-MINIE, from the now discontinued LYMAN-577-611 bullet mold. Enfield muskets were imported and issued by both the North and the South. The Confederacy purchased Enfield muskets from neutral England, and brought them into the south, at great risk, aboard the blockade runners. This replica rifled musket is offered as used, with a bright well maintained bore. The stock has a few minor handling marks and the brass has aged to a mellow patina. The rifled musket has a trigger reach of 13-1/8" and weighs 8.0 pounds.
The tapered round 33" barrel, including the breech plug, is rifled with five lands and grooves with a 1 in 48" rate of twist. The bore is bright, well maintained, and ready to shoot. Nicely polished and blued, the blue black finish is in excellent condition. The sword bayonet lug mounted 4" behind the muzzle. The barrel is tapered round, with a distinct flat at the breech, which makes a smooth transition to the tang. The left hand side of the barrel has the Pedersoli markings, Italian proof marks, as well as replica period British proof marks. The Enfield rifled musket, and the special hollow base Minie bullet that allowed quick reloading, achieved fine accuracy, and much longer range than the round ball muskets of an earlier generation. The rear sight is calibrated and marked in 100 yard increments, up to 900 yards. We note the rear sight is mounted slightly off-center and tilts towards the left when the ladder is raised.
Unlike U. S. Springfield muskets, the Enfield musket is trimmed in brass. Stocked in walnut, the stock has a rich dark brown color and has a few minor handling marks. The brass buttplate and triggerguard are retained with blued steel screws, as original. The center of the buttstock is stamped clearly with the Birmingham Small Arms Trade cartouche. The brass triggerguard is fitted with a correct swivel for a military style leather sling. The brass trim has developed a mellow patina from use. A sling swivel is mounted to the front barrel band. Sling is not included. The correct steel military ramrod easily slides through the barrel bands and into the stock. The hidden end is threaded with a male 5-.8mm thread to accept cleaning and loading accessories.
The color case hardened lock has the classic Enfield shaped percussion hammer. The top of the hammer is checkered for a sure grip when cocking. The lock plate is marked with a crown and 1861 over Tower. This Enfield rifled musket is fitted with a 8-1.25 threaded Enfield musket nipple. The mainspring on this percussion lock is very strong and has a smooth trigger release. Two brass sideplate washers are inlet just below the side panel of the stock, and counter bored to accept the two bolts that retain the lock.
