This Model 1886 Winchester lever action rifle features a polished blued steel action and barrel, and straight grain walnut stock. Designed by John Moses Browning, of Ogden, Utah, he licensed his design for this much improved lever action rifle to Winchester. Unlike earlier Winchester lever action rifles, which use a toggle link to lock the breech, this action has sliding upright elements, designed to chamber the longer more powerful .45-70 Gov't cartridge. This is the early production Browning rifle without the tang safety. This rifle is used with handling marks on the stock. The upper tang has been drilled for a tang sight that has been removed. The lower tang is missing the rear wood screw. The barrel has some marks around the rear sight dovetail. Trigger reach is 13-1/2" and weighs 9 pounds. We have this rifle on display, ready for same day shipment on receipt of your funds and your favorite dealer's signed FFL copy. We must deliver to a Minnesota resident, or to your favorite licensed dealer in any other state.

Chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. The 26" octagon barrel is fitted with a step adjustable Rocky Mountain style rear sight. The rear sight base has some marks on it, and the barrel has a few marks round the dovetail. The front sight is a factory mounted blade sight. A full length tube magazine is mounted below the barrel. This 1886 lever action rifle will be a good shooter for the Cowboy match competitor. The bore is bright and clean with slightly wider grooves than lands. We recommend our Lyman 457-193 bullet mold, with round nose flat point bullet for this cartridge. Have fun casting your own bullets. Size and lubricate with our SPG bullet lubricant. Cartridge cases are readily available from us, or from a variety of sources. It may be wise to buy a quantity of cases, all at the same time, from the same lot, for uniformity. We recommend ordering a least 100 cases, and perhaps 200, depending on your reloading schedule. Track can supply the mold, shell holder, loading dies, bullet lubricant, loading press, sizing dies, and black powder. We always prefer black powder loads, but the XMP-5744 smokeless powder works very well, too. This fine rifle will handle modern factory ammunition with ease.

The tang of the action is marked Browning MODEL 1886, which has been partially obliterated by the tapped hole from a previous sight installation. The off flat of the barrel is marked Cal. 45-70 Gov't. The diagonal flat of the barrel is marked Browning Arms Company Morgan Utah & Montreal Q.C. over Made in Japan. The opposite side is marked Browning Model 1886 Caliber .45-70 Gov't.

The action is polished and finished blue. The loading gate and the screws are matching blue. The lever works smoothly, and locks up tight. Notice the brightly polished action locking bars, visible in our top view. They give this Model 1886 Winchester its high strength designed for the larger .45-70 Gov't cartridges. The Model 1886 Winchester rifle will accept higher pressure loadings than the original 1873 Springfield trapdoor rifle, but be reasonable. Best of all, your can easily hand load the 45-70 cases with a modest charge of black or smokeless powder for great fun. Tailor your hand loads to suit your target.

We can supply the correct Lyman bullet mold, handles, SPG bullet lubricant, sizing dies, sizing press, loading press, electric pot, ingot mold, SPG loading manual, all sold separately.
