Approved by the North South Skirmish Association for use in re-enactments, this Civil War percussion breech loading carbine is one of many invented during that burst of Yankee ingenuity. Stocked in black walnut, this Smith Carbine has a satin smooth finish. The wood has a few small handling marks with one larger chip along the edge of the triggerguard. Trimmed entirely in steel, the furniture is nicely polished and brightly blued, as is the barrel. The tip open breech loading action is color case hardened with deep blues, purples, and silvery grays. The colors are bright and attractive. Trigger reach is 14-1/4" and the carbine weighs 7.6 pounds.

The 21-1/2" long .50 caliber barrel is rifled with three grooves, in original military style. The bore is mirror bright, and easily cleaned, since the breech opens wide. The front sight is a tall brass blade dovetailed directly behind the muzzle. The flip-up ladder sight is dovetailed 4" ahead of the breech. If this carbine shoots low at 100 yards, trim the front sight until the bullets impact the center.

The top view shows the military carbine buttplate, sleek comb, and the unique top latch spring. This pendulum shaped latch spring snaps closed smartly, locking the breech securely in place. The bottom view of the butt end shows the pivoting hinge ahead of the triggerguard, and the saddle ring bar for mounted cavalry use. Our close-up view of the lock shows the percussion hammer, and standard military musket nipple. The factory blued steel nipple is still installed. Be sure to order and install a new #MMI-S stainless steel 8-1mm metric Springfield musket nipple, for best performance. Use our #NW-100 musket nipple wrench to service your Smith Carbine. Apply a little Birchwood Casey Choke Tube Lubricant, #BC-CTL, a highly refined anti-seize compound that will prevent any nipple from becoming stubborn or stuck. Notice the brass plunger lever, ahead of the trigger, inside the triggerguard. Firm pressure on the brass plunger lifts the spring latch, allowing the breech to swing open, for easy loading, and very easy cleaning. In addition to the Italian proof marks (required by their law) the correct original maker's marks are embossed on the left side of the action, a nice touch.

This carbine will be a joy to shoot at the range or carry into battle at your next re-enactment. Perfect for the Civil War collector. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
