A great number of Sharps carbines were manufactured during the American Civil War for cavalry units. . This nice replica was manufactured by Shiloh Sharps when they were located in Farmingdale, New York. This breech loading percussion Sharps Carbine features a .50 caliber 22" tapered round barrel, color case hardened action and furniture, saddle ring, and walnut stock. Lightly used, this carbine has a few small handling marks in the walnut stock with most on the left side of the buttstock. Trigger reach is 13-3/4", weight is a modest 7.7 pounds.

The 22" tapered round barrel is .50 caliber. Roll your own paper cartridges, or load this rifle with loose powder after inserting a lubricated bullet. The tapered round barrel is marked Black Powder Only Cal .50 and New Model 1863 ahead of the breech. By putting the lock at half cock and lowering the breech block. You can easily see that carbine has been well maintained, and the bore is bright. The military style front sight is an iron blade, in an integral steel base. The military rear sight is calibrated with markings to 800 yards.

The walnut stock has a warm brown tone and is finished to a satin sheen. The stock has some minor dents and dings from handling and use. The military carbine style buttplate, lock, and action are color case hardened and show nice mottled blues and purples. The bottom view shows the lever, and lever latch, a correct feature for this Model 1863 Sharps. The lever, triggerplate and the action are color case hardened. The color case hardened barrel band is mounted with a band spring. Removal of this band often marks the barrel. This carbine shows none of that typical wear.

The big Sharps lock fires a U. S. Musket cap, through the musket nipple. We can provide the correct #NW-100 nipple wrench, and a spare nipples, at small extra cost. Order our musket nipple #MMS-I with 5/16-24 threads. A heavy duty mainspring drives the big hammer. The lock feels crisp, and works smoothly. This Model 1863 Sharps carbine has a single trigger, which is tuned for smooth light release. The lever latch, to the rear of the lever, is a correct feature. The large percussion hammer reaches over the military style Lawrence pellet primer, non-operational. The finger shaped lever, at the front of the action, may be rotated and withdrawn, to dismount the lever and breech block, for easy cleaning. Remove the breech block, gas check, and nipple, and clean these in hot soapy water at the end of each day's use. Apply a tiny amount of Birchwood Casey's Choke Tube Lube, graphite grease, or anti-seize grease, and reassemble the gas check, breech block, and lever, into your rifle.

The side panel below the action displays a few marks in the stock from the saddle ring, which is typical on this model. In excellent condition, it has a few marks in the stock finish. The bore is clean and bright, with crisp rifling, in perfect condition. This nice replica New Model 1863 Sharps .50 percussion rifle is ready for same day shipment, directly to you.
